Californian Lives On and On in its' Name State

Way back in the 1970s trawler yachts were known for several things: they were roomy and comfortable, decidedly seakindly, and fuel efficient. Trawlers were also seen as maddeningly slow when compared to sport fishers and other powerboats, they were expensive, and they were all built overseas. However, these views were magnificently shattered by Jule Marshall and Myrna Elliott, partners who founded the highly regarded sailboat manufacturer Ericson Yachts and who went on to create Californian Yachts in 1977.

Californian 34 diesel cruisers filled a niche previously unoccupied. With 238 produced between 1977 and 1984, Californian 34s were faster and cheaper than their Asian counterparts and they were built tough in the good old USA. Jule designed the hulls and superstructures while Myrna designed the interiors. The results were impressive. With more horsepower and a semi-displacement hull, Californian 34s have less roll, more lift, and higher speeds than their competitors. Topside, Myrna reworked the interior design of the Grand Banks 32 to provide for an extra stateroom, a roomy head, a fully equipped galley, and large windows to provide a light and airy ambiance. Above all, the Californian 34 is one of the most versatile boats on the water. Cruising at low speeds the efficient diesels provide the leisurely ride of a typical trawler yacht. Throw open the throttles and you can get where you’re going in hurry. Add a fighting chair or two and you’ve got a sportfisher, set up cockpit awning and you’ve got a party boat for friends and family.

If all this has you Californian dreaming, you’re in luck.
