Union Polaris Is Timeless Quality in a Sailing Yacht

Union Polaris yachts are some of the most beautiful sailboats on the water, with timeless lines and classic beauty. Originally conceived in California in the early 1970s by John Edwards, a Long Beach high school teacher, the design was created by world-renowned naval architect Robert H. Perry. Originally conceived as the Hans Christian 34, Edwards stretched the sailboat 2 feet adding a foot in the center and a foot aft of the cockpit. The new design, manufactured by the Union Ship Company in Taipei, was christened the Union 36.

The Union 36 is a full keeled, heavy duty cruiser. Perry describes why he settled on the shapely pointed canoe stern: “The canoe stern made a lot of sense because it allowed the designer to stretch out the buttocks and avoid tucking them up until the last possible moment. It pulled a lot of volume aft [and] improved the sailing length, stability, and lazarette volume.”

About 160 rugged offshore Union 36 cruisers were manufactured before production shut down in late 1987. But the Namaste, anchored at Harbor Island in San Diego, is keeping the Perry legend alive. This boat has been continually upgraded and maintained with thousands of dollars worth of work done in 2013 alone. This gorgeous yacht features a teak interior in excellent condition, and a well-designed nav station with a 40-inch wide chart table with two large chart drawers. The entertainment system on the Namaste includes a flat-screen TV mounted opposite the dinette and Bose speakers in the salon with external cockpit speakers and remote control.
